Did you know that recycling is mandatory in the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District?

The District passed a Mandatory Recycling Ordinance 94-01 (effective 10/1/95) which requires the separation of recyclable items from the trash.

How does this ordinance affect you?

• Households: If you have your waste picked up at your home, the hauler is required to provide for collection of recyclables as well as trash.
• Renters: If you rent and the property owner provides trash collection, the property owner is also required to provide for the collection of recyclable items.
• Businesses: The hauler you contract with for trash collection is required to provide recycling collection as well.
• If you self-haul (ie. take your trash to a bag drop or transfer station), the hauler or drop-off location is required to also accept the mandatory recyclable items.

In addition, the hauler, transfer station, or bag-drop is also required to give you a financial incentive to recycle. This means that recycling services must cost less than trash services.

Households must recycle:

• Newspaper
• Clear glass bottles and jars
• #2 HDPE jugs
• Tin and aluminum cans

Businesses, schools, & municipalities must recycle:

• Newspaper
• Clear glass bottles and jars
• #2 HDPE jugs
• Tin and aluminum cans
• Corrugated cardboard
• White office paper

U.S. EPA estimates that paper and paperboard account for almost 40% of our garbage.

Why Recycle?

Recycling keeps valuable resources in use, in addition to conserving landfill space. The items that must be recycled in the District comprise a large volume of the recyclable materials entering the municipal solid wastestream.

In addition to the mandatory recyclables, the District offers recycling services for a wide range of materials brought to its Recycling Depots, from used motor oil and antifreeze to scrap metal and electronics. See the CVSWMD Recycling Depots matrix for details on items accepted at each location.

Where to Recycle?

• Households can use the CVSWMD Recycling Depots
• Businesses: Contact a licensed hauler for business recycling and trash pickups.
• In addition, there are probably transfer stations and "bag drops" owned and/or operated by private businesses in your area. Contact your town clerk for info.
