Junk Car Removal

How to Get Rid of a Vehicle You Don't Want

  1. Reuse: donate it to a charitable organization, or
  2. Recycle: contract with a metal recycler to have it hauled away.

1. Donate Your Unwanted Vehicle

Donate working vehicles (or even those in need of repair) to a reuse outlet that accepts vehicles, repairs them, and gets them to folks who need them.

  • Good News Garage in Burlington (802-864-3667);
  • Community Action Motors, a division of Central Vermont Community Action (802-476-7800).

Other charitable organizations may also accept vehicles for reuse. Contact them directly for vehicle age/condition restrictions.

Donations may be tax-deductible; consult a tax advisor with questions.

2. Get it Hauled for Recycling

Contact one of the hauling contractors listed here to remove the vehicle. The contractor will help you assess hauling costs when you call. In general, vehicles must be cleaned out and any trash or extra tires removed.

If the vehicle belongs to you and you don't have the title, contact the VT Department of Motor Vehicles for an "Application for Duplicate Title" form. If you want to recycle a vehicle that does not belong to you, you must submit a "Request for Abandoned Vehicle Certification" form. These forms are also available online via the DMV Web site: www.dmv.state.vt.us; click "Forms" and then "Title Forms."

Processing may take up to 90 days and there is a fee involved.
