Garbage Disposal

Garbage Disposal

Think about what you're throwing away before you toss it in the can!

The following categories of materials sometimes end up in the garbage, but shouldn't! Click on a category to learn how to properly handle such items.

After you reduce, reuse, and recycle all you can, there may be some materials left over that you'll need to dispose of. With this in mind, most of the Recycling Depots the District runs and/or supports also accept garbage for a fee.

Garbage Costs

The cost of garbage disposal is $3.50 for each 30 gallon/25lb bag. The additional fee for a larger and/or heavier bag will be determined by the Attendant when you drop it off.

Where does my $3.50 go?

Prices vary for an average 25 pound/30 gallon bag of trash, but what the price must cover remains the same. Every hauler or facility needs to cover the same costs - collection; transportation; landfill/disposal costs; labor/staff including drivers and drop-off site attendants, equipment; the VT state tax; and a District surcharge.

The money that is left after paying for these costs is the profit for the private business, or the funds that a non-profit or government entity has available to redirect to other programs, such as special collections or keeping the cost of recycling low or free.
